The photograph is taken from Castle Naze, an Iron Age hill fort that is situated at the Northern edge of Combs Moss, west of Dove Holes atop a steep gritstone escarpment at 427m (1400ft) above sea level. The direction of the photograph is north west looking towards South Head and Mount Famine, the aeroplane contrails point towards Manchester airport.
